What is Alkaline Diet? Facts and Benefits
Some Facts About the Alkaline Diet
Apart from what the advocates of this diet suggest, there is no evidence that an alkaline diet can cure chronic diseases or cancer. There are still ongoing research on this subject.
The pH level of our blood and body cells is strictly controlled and cannot be changed by the food we eat. Certain foods can change the pH level of urine but it is only a proof that our kidneys are working fine to keep the pH level in balance.
What Do You Eat in Alkaline Diet?
The alkaline diet is centered on, as the name suggests, alkalizing foods. Vegetables and seeds have the highest level of alkaline, followed by fruits. This may be surprising, but lemon and lime are one of the most alkalizing fruits.
Meats, alcohol, coffee, sugar, bread, and some sort of nuts are acidic. Butter and margarine are more acidic than olive oil, sunflower oil, or coconut oil. Most of the herbs and spices are widely preferred in alkaline diet.
What is Good About Alkaline Diet?
Although there is not enough evidence to back up alkaline diet, some parts of this diet are acceptable. Most of us depend on processed food and meat in our diets and ignore vegetables generally. Alkaline diet encourages people to avoid processed food and consume more vegetable.
Does Alkaline Diet Help You Lose Weight?
Although the idea behind the alkaline diet is fascinating, it is because it basically rolls any common diet of removal into one that so many celebrities venture their weight-loss forces. The system bans dairy, meat, eggs, wheat, refined carbs, processed foods, caffeine, coffee, and soda, all of which proponents of the diet claim would throw off the pH levels in the body. Here’s what you should eat: fruits, nuts, vegetables and legumes. These all have high levels of alkaline, or acid-neutralizing.
What really helps an alkaline dieter lose weight, however, is to reduce calories and blood-sugar spikes caused by consuming processed carbohydrates and sugary foods.
And as the diet is so low in animal protein, most stringent followers will not only lose fat — they will also lose muscle. That is clearly not ideal for your health, metabolism, or figure. Another side effect of the alkaline diet is that removing animal products will lead to deficiencies in B-12 as well as anemia.
