Beginner’s Guide to Paleo Diet

The Paleo Diet is an increasingly popular method that puts emphasis on fresh, natural foods while avoiding highly processed ingredients. Some people have turned to this type of diet and have seen impact on improving their wellbeing, improving the quality of their food intake and, of course, losing weight.

The Paleo approach is generally safe and effective but, as with all diets, it’s not without problem.

I will offer a short summary of what the Paleo diet is, why it is beneficial and, of course, any downsides that should be addressed in this article.

What is Paleo Diet?

The Paleo diet was first taken into consideration with the notion of returning to our day in mind.

Most citizens believe that much of our illnesses as a society, such as elevated obesity levels and other metabolic-based disease conditions, are attributed to industrial agricultural methods and heavily refined foods.

The diet of Paleo is primarily focused on exclusion of the high-processing products and other controversial additives, such as milk and even artificial sweeteners, and inclusion of proteins, organic foods, fruits, nuts and seeds.

Foods You Should Avoid on A Paleo Diet

What you’ll note when following a Paleo diet is that many of the products avoided are actually foods that causes allergic reactions to some people. This makes sense as the Paleo Diet premise is that our bodies have never been designed in the first place to consume these foods! An outline of what foods are commonly avoided is given below:

Grains
Legumes
Dairy
Refined Sugar
Alcohol
Processed Foods
Trans-Fats
Soda and Energy Drinks

Foods to Eat on A Paleo Diet

The best thing about following a Paleo diet is you get to consume so many nutritious and healthy foods. Below is a summary of the major food categories recommended for eating.

Meats
Seafood
Eggs
Vegetables
Fruit
Nuts and Seeds
Animal Fats
Healthy Oils

Paleo for Weight Loss

One of the reasons that people start paleo is because they hope it helps them slim down or hold it off. Paleo’s weight loss advantages aren’t a myth but have been supported by a fact and science. A research was conducted by the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition where the main purpose was to determine the impact of the paleo diet. Scientists also observed that weight decreased by 5lbs while BMI decreased by 0.8 and the diameter of the waist decreased by 0.6 in three weeks.

A research published in the Journal of Internal Medicine entailed ten healthy women with BMI over 27 and reported that women lost an average of 9.9lbs and had a waist circumference reduction of 3.1 inches in five weeks of time.

Given that paleo lifestyle often encourages daily exercise and avoids foods that are too high in calories, it is not surprising that it can help people lose weight or keep it within a reasonable range.
